Magnus Carlsen is the recipient of the 2020 Fair Play Svetozar Gligoric award this year.
The spirit of the trophy is to give recognition to an individual who had displayed exemplary behaviour that promotes the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship in chess.
One year ago, in his 1st game of the semifinals of the online tournament “Chessable Masters” against Ding Liren, Magnus won an equal ending due to a disconnection by Ding. In the 2nd game, Carlsen gave up his Queen and resigned after just four moves to restore parity in the match.
The World Champion will receive his trophy today, right before his debut game at the #FIDEWolrdCup.
